Mae and Alice had spent most of Monday in town, first at the doctor’s office and then at the police station. The hospital pharmacy had been put on lockdown while an inventory was conducted. Bill Manning was put on paid leave pending an investigation, which he accepted without complaint, obviously distressed by the incident. Alice sympathized, but the whole situation left her brain reeling. Somewhere between the pharmacy and Mae’s house, someone had put Klonopin, a benzodiazepine used to treat seizures and panic attacks, in with Mae’s Oxycodone. The combination could have been fatal, especially for a person whose body had been weakened by trauma. Would someone want to kill Mae? Who would have had the opportunity? And was this a second attempt?

Other than Alice and Will, Mae had not been in contact with anyone since the prescription had been filled, but Alice had been out of the house for several hours on Friday while taking Rosy to the vet. Deputy Morrison and an officer from the Jasper Police Department had searched Mae’s house and property.

Margaret took Tuesday off and came up to Jasper to spend the day with Mae. Alice had a meeting scheduled in Tate for her story, and though she wanted to cancel, Margaret urged her to go, assuring her they’d be quite safe. Alice only relented because Margaret planned on staying all day. Alice had no intention of leaving Mae alone again, even for a few minutes, until this whole medication debacle had been resolved.

Driving down the highway from Jasper toward Tate, Alice tried to bask in the gorgeous Georgia scenery, but she was distracted. She’d agreed to meet Sally Jenkins, a local historian, at Millie’s Diner on the outskirts of Tate. As she neared the town, she remembered a Christmas a few years back when she and Will had visited and he’d brought her down to Tate for the holiday house tours of the Historic Tate House. As the home of the Georgia Marble Company, Tate was known for its marble and the Tate House was constructed out of a rare pink marble quarried right in its own backyard. It was a gorgeous house with elegant gardens used for summer weddings. The Christmas decor had transported Alice back in time. She’d fallen in love with everything Georgian on that trip.

She spied the red roof on Millie’s Diner and found a spot in the parking lot. Having arrived a few minutes early, she took the time to check her email and make some preliminary notes. She’d been vague on the phone about what she was hoping to research in Tate. Since receiving the message to get out of town, Alice had been more reserved when talking with people about her work. She hoped to develop some rapport with Mrs. Jenkins before springing such a grisly line of inquiry on her.

Alice entered the restaurant and asked for a table for two, telling the hostess she was meeting someone. She ordered coffee and let her mind wander as she gazed out the window at the Georgia countryside.
